During their meeting this (Monday) morning, the Carroll County Board of Supervisors canvassed the results of the June 4 primaries, making the winners of those races official. According to data from the Iowa Secretary of State’s Office, voter turnout was about average for a primary at 9.43 percent, with 1,405 total votes cast across the Carroll County Republican, Democratic, and Libertarian parties. County Auditor Kourtney Payer noted no changes at this (Monday) morning’s meeting to the unofficial results from last week and listed the winners for each party in the county races, beginning with the Republicans.

The only local contested primary on the ballot was for the GOP District 5 Supervisor nomination, which McCrea won with 866 votes to his opponent, Adam Schweers, who had 312. Payer says there were no contested races on the Democratic side, so determining the nominees for the General Election was simple.

The Libertarian Party gained “major party” status in 2017 after their 2016 presidential candidate, Gary Johnson, surpassed the two-percent threshold required to be recognized. However, Libertarian turnout was very low in Carroll County, with less than a dozen ballots cast in last Tuesday’s primary. Payer says that led to some interesting circumstances when determining the winners.

The supervisors unanimously approved the June 4 primary canvass, setting up a November ballot with very few contested local races. In House District 11, Republican Craig Williams of Manning will be up against Democrat Jeff Rich of Glidden. For Senate District 6, Republican Jason Schultz is against Libertarian David Davis of Harlan. Finally, for the District 5 Supervisor seat, Democrat Cindy Johnson of Carroll is against Republican Mark McCrea of Carroll. Statewide primary results are available with this story on our website.
