A Guthrie County-based non-profit group that helps cover medical expenses for families with critically ill children, Tori’s Angels, is hosting a fundraiser Sunday morning. MJ Brown, a Tori’s Angels board member, says the idea for the organization started in 2010 after the Panora United Methodist Church began collecting funds to assist a local family grappling with severe medical issues.
Brown says Tori recently graduated from Panorama High School and is doing well. Those efforts to help a family in need led the original organizers to ask why they couldn’t help families with similar medical challenges, and Tori’s Angels was born. Brown says they’ve supported over 150 families in the last 13 years.
The average amount paid by the foundation per child is around $5,000 per year, but Tori’s Angels has covered procedures costing as much as $40,000 in some cases. Sunday’s fundraiser runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Panora Community Center and includes a breakfast of pancakes, sausage, eggs, and beverages for a free-will donation. Brown says they also have a silent auction going on at the same time.
Those unable to attend Sunday’s Tori’s Angels fundraiser can still support the organization by donating online at www.torisangels.org or dropping off contributions at Iowa Trust Bank or Guthrie County State Bank in Panora.
