The Audubon County Sheriff’s Office advises motorists from the area to monitor their card transactions after card skimmers were found on gas pumps at an Exira fueling station. According to law enforcement, the info-stealing devices are believed to have been placed on pumps 5 and 6 at the Exira Casey’s location sometime on June 18 or 19. Motorists who purchased fuel from those pumps during that timeframe are asked to monitor bank accounts and credit card statements and report any fraudulent activity to the Audubon County Sheriff’s Office and the respective financial institution. Card skimmers are small devices placed over card readers by criminals to collect card numbers illegally. These devices are often challenging to detect, but there are several ways to notice them before swiping. Check that all equipment on a pump, ATM, or other similar equipment is aligned correctly. Odd angles or loose connections are often signs that a skimmer has been installed. When in doubt, avoid paying at the pump and speak to a cashier inside the station.
