Today (Thursday) is officially the first day of summer, and Carroll County Public Health wants to ensure everyone is having a fun but safe time out in the sun. Starting on Friday at the Coon Rapids Aquatic Center, Public Health staff will be attending local pools to offer free sunscreen and to provide sun safety activities and tips. One ounce of sunscreen is all needed to cover areas of the body that are exposed, reducing the risk of skin cancer and early skin aging. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends choosing a sunscreen with a broad spectrum, meaning it protects the skin from ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, has an SPF of 30 or higher, and is water resistant from 40 to 80 minutes. Carroll County Public Health staff will also be at the Breda swimming pool on June 24, at Carroll Aquatic Center on June 26, and on July 11 at Manning Hillside Splash. More dates will be announced soon, so follow the Carroll County Public Health Facebook page to stay updated on the latest tips and information. A link to the social media page has been included below.
