Whiterock Conservancy Extending Current Internships with Green Iowa AmeriCorps To Help Promote Conservation Efforts

Whiterock Conservancy in Coon Rapids is excited to be offering three interns a chance to gain experiences in land stewardship, conservation efforts, and other various duties to support Whiterock’s mission. This program is available through a partnership with AmeriCorps, a federal agency for national service and volunteerism throughout the United States, with Green Iowa AmeriCorps being the branch that works with Whiterock Conservancy by approving applicants for the internship program and then recommends them to different organizations. Executive Director for Whiterock, Kate Zimmerman, says this is the second year that the organization has worked with Green Iowa AmeriCorps to provide this opportunity and is excited to extend the current interns’ duration at Whiterock even longer.

Zimmerman says depending on what aspect the intern is most interested in is where they are placed throughout the conservancy. Most of the work completed involves land maintenance, but Zimmerman says they want to provide a wide diversity of all the facets of Whiterock Conservancy.

One of the requirements of this internship program is that the individual offers a professional development project, getting the community involved in conservation, education, and more. Zimmerman says two interns have already completed one project by inviting some students from the Coon Rapids Bayard Community School District for a field day to learn about conservation. Zimmerman says the interns plan to expand the program, offering it to more than just students.
