Gov. Kim Reynolds announced late yesterday (Monday) that President Joe Biden has approved Iowa’s request for a Major Disaster Declaration for counties hit by severe storms, flooding, straight-line winds, and tornadoes beginning on June 16. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) are now authorized to assist Clay, Emmet, Lyon, Plymouth, and Sioux counties. Reynolds will request additional counties as more information is gathered. Residents in these counties can apply for FEMA’s Individual Assistance Program, which offers support for housing, personal property replacement, medical expenses, and legal services. Homeowners, renters, businesses, and nonprofit organizations can apply for low-interest disaster loans from the SBA. Additionally, small businesses and agricultural cooperatives may apply for working capital loans. The FEMA Public Assistance Program, providing funding for emergency work such as debris removal, has also been activated for several counties, including Buena Vista, Clay, Dickinson, Emmet, Lyon, O’Brien, Osceola, Plymouth, and Sioux. Flooding conditions are expected to expand as water from torrential rainfall late last week moves southward.
