Iowa Health and Human Services (HHS) warns of serious illnesses reported from Iowans who have consumed a specific brand of micro-dosing mushroom-infused treats and advises Iowans to dispose of this product. Across 20 states, 39 individuals have reported feeling ill after taking Diamond Shruumz products, a handcrafted dietary supplement in the form of chocolate bars, gummies, and mini cones in multiple flavors, “for those seeking a subtle, sumptuous experience and a more creative state of mind” according to the Diamond Shruumz website. The treats are made with adaptogens, a natural compound produced from herbs, roots, and mushrooms, which are advertised to reduce stress, boost energy levels, improve mood and cognitive function, and support the immune system. The U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning earlier this month about the products that are for sale at consumable hemp retailers, tobacco and vape shops, and online that the side effects from consuming Diamond Shruumz treats include seizures, central nervous system, depression, anxiety, abnormal heart rates, hypertension, nausea, and vomiting. Of those reported ill, 25 sought medical attention, 23 were hospitalized, and no deaths have been reported, according to the FDA. Consumers are asked to refrain from eating, selling, or serving any flavor of the Diamond Shruumz brand products, check homes, and discard any items if found. If individuals become ill after consuming products, they are asked to contact a healthcare provider or call Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222. Consult with a healthcare provider or Poison Help that a Diamond Shruumz product was consumed before the onset of symptoms. The FDA is currently investigating the reasons behind the illnesses and is working on a possible voluntary recall with the firm, but nothing official has been decided. The FDA cannot issue a mandatory product recall as the state does not regulate the consumables.
