A recent report from the Iowa Hospital Association (IHA) shows Iowa’s hospitals contributed more than $21.3 billion to the state’s economy in 2023, $169.2 million of which is from St. Anthony Regional Hospital. St. Anthony Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Eric Salmonson says that is a remarkable figure for a rural facility.

A significant amount of those funds go straight back into the local economy, including more than $45.4 million in payroll and benefits.

St. Anthony Regional Hospital is the county’s largest employer, with 748 part-time and full-time employees, but Salmonson says the hospital’s economic impact extends beyond its staff.

Salmonson adds that the St. Anthony Regional Hospital and Cancer Center also brings people from all 99 counties and even from out of state to Carroll. One factor that is not included in the IHA’s report is charitable care for those unable to afford medical expenses. In 2023, St. Anthony provided over $1.3 million in philanthropic services.
