The Lake City Council approved, during a special meeting this past Monday, hiring two additional police officers to join the force with increased pay. The council members have agreed to set the salary for new, incoming police officers at $25 per hour if not certified. Certified officers who are hired would receive at least $27 per hour, but it could be more based on experience. City officials have also agreed to a moving expense of up to $3,000 and a $5,000 sign-on bonus for certified officers who commit to a four-year contract. City Administrator Jacob Matthews says that city council members understand that the market to hire officers is extremely competitive. Matthews says the hiring bonus and the moving expense are two key mechanisms to have the city be able to hire highly qualified officers to join the Lake City Police force. The application period is now open, and interested individuals can pick up an application at City Hall in Lake City or call the office at 712-640-6401 to have an application sent via email.
