In response to the recent communities impacted by natural disasters such as flooding or severe storms, the Iowa Department of Corrections (DOC) and Iowa Prison Industries (IPI) are partnering together with Homes for Iowa (HFI) to build five new houses. Counties receiving FEMA Individual Assistance can purchase an HFI home to provide individuals who have lost their home with a new structure at a more affordable price and in a shorter period. The five new homes that will be constructed will measure 24 by 50 feet and include three bedrooms and two baths, with spacious and modern living spaces. The houses must also include a basement to provide a crucial shelter area during high-wind or severe weather events. Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds says, “Homes for Iowa provides a turnkey solution for disaster-impacted communities that want to expedite their rebuilding process. Supporting displaced Iowans in getting back into homes in their communities is our highest priority.” The HFI initiative will provide affordable homes and offer incarcerated individuals hands-on experiences for a successful reentry into society.
