Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) says Congress plans to intensely investigate the failures of former President Donald Trump’s protective detail following the assassination attempt during a rally in rural Pennsylvania on Saturday evening. Grassley was watching the rally live when the attempt on Trump’s life took place, and he says it was clear within just a few minutes that some glaring errors had to be made for this to happen.
Details are still being uncovered about the attempted assassination, but what is known is the 20-year-old shooter managed to get onto a roof within 200 yards of the former president and fire multiple rounds before the U.S. Secret Service killed the shooter. One of those rounds struck Trump in his right ear. One person in the crowd was killed, and two others were seriously injured. Grassley says the loss of life is tragic, and his team is already beginning their own investigation into the attempted assassination.
Grassley says he and every other elected official need to reconsider their rhetoric after this past weekend.
Grassley made his comments during his weekly Capitol Hill Report with Iowa reporters.
