Gov. Kim Reynolds announced yesterday (Thursday) that applications are now open for $13 million in new grant funding for Iowa’s opioid treatment and recovery providers. Reynolds introduced the latest funding opportunity in May as part of a larger $17.5 million investment to combat the opioid crisis. She says, “The battle against substance use disorder is all too familiar for families struggling through the opioid epidemic. This funding for projects that support prevention, treatment, and recovery can provide addicted Iowans a pathway to sobriety and a productive, fulfilling life.” The $10 million Iowa Opioid Treatment and Recovery Infrastructure Grant will aid providers in expanding or rehabilitating facilities. Applications are open through Sept. 30. The Iowa Recovery Housing Fund will offer $3 million for sober recovery housing development. Nonprofits can apply from July 29 to Oct. 31. An additional $1.5 million will support programs focusing on opioid addiction prevention, including a $1 million education initiative for healthcare providers to promote non-opioid pain management for post-surgery recovery. This initiative will launch later this year following an RFP on Aug. 1. The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will also use $500,000 for a comprehensive multimedia opioid overdose prevention campaign this fall. The remaining $3 million will fund the completion of the YSS Ember Recovery Campus, a residential addiction treatment center for teens in Cambridge, set to open later this year.
