Members of the Carroll Community School District (CCSD) Food Service Department, Administration, and volunteers faced the 90-plus degree weather today (Wednesday) to hand out packaged meals during the last day of the district’s Summer Grab and Go Feeding Program. This year, CCSD provided 42,575 meals to children and students in the Carroll area, which is expected to increase by 1,400 after today’s (Wednesday’s) distribution. Every Wednesday at Fairview Elementary since June 12, vehicles would line up, waiting their turn to receive five breakfast and lunch entrees, with fruit, vegetables, and healthy snacks for sides to ensure children are fed a nutritious meal while relieving some financial burden for families. CCSD Food Service Director Melanie Girard says some staff members worked 11-hour days to prepare, sort and package the food to have ready to go for pick-ups.

Girard wants to thank the many volunteers, including community members, teachers, staff, and even students, for helping the food service department distribute 1,300 to 1,500 meals weekly.

New this year was the Anderson Erickson (AE) Dairy delivery truck parked right outside the school, keeping the milk cool while meals were distributed. Girard says due to the volume of milk that needed to be ordered, without the partnership with AE Diary, the district would have only been able to serve maybe half of the number of students with meals.

The district’s administration encourages families to contact AE Dairy and express their gratitude and appreciation for the partnership. A link to leave feedback is included below. Girard says that with the conclusion of another successful summer grab-and-go meal program, it has been wonderful to work with the community to continue to provide a need for students. She looks forward to next year doing it all over again.
