Born on June 17, 1962 in Audubon, IA, David was the fourth son of Donald and Janice (Carter) Andersen. He grew up on his family’s farm outside of Audubon with his four brothers, Bruce, Tim, Brian, and Steve. He attended elementary school in Gray, IA until seventh grade when he switched to the Audubon School District for junior high, eventually graduating with the Audubon High School class of 1980. After high school, David attended DMACC in Ankeny, IA for a short time before moving to Texas for work.
David’s time in Texas was short lived as he learned he was going to be a father for the first time. He returned to Audubon and married Toni Petersen in 1981. To this union, his daughters Stacy and Samantha were born. David and Toni later divorced. In 1993, David married Chris Murray and to this union David gained a step-daughter, Candise, and his third daughter, Kyli. David and Chris also later divorced, but stayed good friends throughout the years. Being a father was one of David’s greatest joys in life next to being a grandfather to his five granddaughters, Maci, Neveah, Hailey, Jaylee, and Grace. David was proud of all of his girls and talked about them often.
Throughout the years, David held many various jobs. He was really the jack of all trades as there weren’t many things he didn’t know how to do. Some of his jobs included driving semi for George Brincks Trucking, hog confinement work for AMVC, HVAC work at Templeton Hardware, and maintenance at Global Precision Parts in Audubon, IA. David also owned and operated The Waterhole bar in Templeton, IA from 2002 to 2004. In 2010, David began one of his true passions in life, farming. David farmed alongside his brothers Steve and Bruce, and his nephew, Derek, until the time of his death.
David was known for his wit, intelligence, creativity, and kindness. He was a great friend to many, often thinking of others before himself. An avid outdoorsman, he cherished hunting and fishing. David was famous for making the best deer jerky, something his family looked forward to every December. Additionally, he spent countless hours in his shop crafting various items for his friends and family, showcasing his creative and kind spirit.
David is survived by his daughters: Stacy (Matt) Schmitz of Panama, IA, Samantha Andersen and fiancée Blake Johannes of Kimballton, IA, and Kyli (Matthew) Ware of Glidden, IA; step-daughter Candise (Josh) Schmitz of Avoca, IA; his five granddaughters: Maci, Neveah, Hailey, Jaylee, and Grace; his parents, Donald and Janice Andersen of Audubon, IA; his brothers: Bruce (Tina) Andersen, Tim (Jan) Andersen, Brian Andersen (Greg), Steve (Tonia) Andersen all of Audubon, IA; his devoted companion, Julie Knutsen of Audubon, IA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
David was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Samuel and Elvira Andersen, his maternal grandparents, Henry and Delphine Carter, and his best friend, Gene “Gopher” Weitl in 2022.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of David, whose generosity and creativity touched the lives of many.
David’s family would like to extend their gratitude to the Nebraska Cancer Specialists, Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital, Audubon County Memorial Hospital, Hospice of the Midwest, and all of the friends and family who supported David through his cancer journey. Your love and care meant so much to all of us.
