State Auditor Rob Sand Discusses Lack Of Internal Control In Recent Report Findings

During his town hall visit in Carroll, State Auditor Rob Sand elaborates on internal control deficiencies, an issue reported in his office’s audits of counties, cities, and schools throughout the state. A recent report on Audubon County for Fiscal Year (FY) 2023 highlighted this issue regarding the segregation of duties across various county offices. Sand says this might be difficult in more rural areas of the state, but it’s the auditor’s office’s responsibility to point out these findings regardless.

Sand says his job is ensuring that government officials use taxpayer-funded money for the intended purposes that benefit Iowans. He has one solution that would help segregate duties among local government offices.

By creating this team, Sand says officials would have a support system close to home, monitoring the offices’ duties, and would not need to hire additional individuals specifically for this committee. Sand says governmental offices can contact his office for help if they need more guidance.
