Exploration Company To Begin Seismic Testing Near Lidderdale Later This Month In Search For Underground Hydrogen

A Colorado-based exploration firm will soon begin seismic testing in Carroll County as it searches for hydrogen trapped in geologic formations underground. Twin Rivers Exploration LLC was founded in 2022 and recently completed land surveys in Webster County. The phrase “seismic testing” brings to mind mining crews and sticks of dynamite, but Twin Rivers Land Representative Chris Justice says their testing methods are much more mundane.

Twin Rivers’ primary survey area is an approximately five-mile square grid with Lidderdale at its center. These vibro-seismic trucks will begin operating in the region from the week of Aug. 19 through the end of the month. Justice explains what will happen if they find suitable hydrogen-storing formations.

So even if Twin Rivers finds hydrogen in Carroll County, residents shouldn’t expect to see fields of pumpjacks or derricks like the ones in Texas or North Dakota. Justice adds that additional surveys will be necessary to determine if extraction is viable before the company begins drilling. He says the economic impact if hydrogen is found is substantial.

That outcome is dependent on Twin Rivers locating hydrogen in the first place. There are some early indications that hydrogen could be trapped underground, and the seismic testing will provide more information on the volume and locations. Justice says the biggest concern is safety around the seismic-testing trucks.

He says structures near the testing sites are not affected by the testing. Justice says Twin Rivers wants to be transparent with the public throughout this testing process and any future developments. He encourages people with questions or concerns to reach out to the company through its website at www.twinrivers-exp.com.
