Two registered nurses from Stewart Memorial Community Hospital (SMCH) were awarded the DAISY award after being nominated by the same patient. Vance Wheeler and Carrie Gentry have been presented with this recognition for their exceptional care and compassion to a patient who felt the need to honor these nurses even after expressing difficulty writing. Wheeler was described as punctual, attentive to the patient’s needs, and unfailingly polite and helpful. The nomination stated Gentry was a dedicated nurse, genuinely concerned for the patient’s well-being and very responsive to care for the individual and his family. The patient has since passed away, but his wife came in during the presentation ceremony to express her gratitude to Wheeler and Gentry for their compassionate care not only for her husband but also for the family. SMCH administrators and staff say that both nurses have a distinguished history with patient recognition and awards and are immensely proud to have them on the SMCH healthcare team.
