Great Iowa Treasure Hunt Returns Over $500,000 In Unclaimed Assets During 2024 Iowa State Fair

Iowa State Treasurer Roby Smith has announced another successful year of reuniting Iowans with their missing money at the Iowa State Fair through the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt. During the fair’s 11-day run, more than 2,400 claims were filed, leading to nearly $573,00 being returned to rightful owners. The largest single claim filed amounted to $50,717. The Great Iowa Treasure Hunt is the state’s official program for returning unclaimed property, which includes assets like dormant bank accounts, lost stocks, uncashed checks, and safe deposit box contents. State law mandates that such assets be transferred to the Treasurer’s Office for safekeeping when financial institutions and businesses lose contact with the owner. Smith urged Iowans to continue searching for unclaimed money, noting that his office currently holds over $521 million in unclaimed property. Try it yourself at www.greatiowatreasurehunt.gov.
