A Paton man was killed over the weekend following a single-vehicle crash in rural Greene County. According to the Iowa State Patrol, that crash occurred at approximately 10:08 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of 130th Street and P Avenue, about seven miles east of Churdan. Authorities say 31-year-old Kyle Shank of Paton was traveling eastbound on 130th Street in a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and attempted to pass another eastbound vehicle. Officials note both vehicles were traveling at a high rate of speed at the time. Shank’s truck dropped off the north shoulder and entered the ditch, traveling over a field drive and becoming airborne. The pickup rolled several times, end over end, before it came to rest in the nearby cornfield. Shank was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. He died due to injuries sustained in the crash. His passenger, 30-year-old Sydney Shank, also of Paton, was transported to Greene County Hospital in Jefferson by Greene County Emergency Services for treatment. An investigation into the incident is ongoing. The Greene County Sheriff’s Office, alongside other area agencies, assisted at the scene.
