Lyle Paulsen of Coon Rapids

Lyle LaVerne Paulsen, age 86, of Coon Rapids, IA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 27, 2024 surrounded by his family.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, August 31, 2024 at the First United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids with Rev. Ben Kolars officiating.  Music for the service will be by Cindy Seastrom. Casket bearers will be Brandon Risius, Eli Waters, Jonathon Wiskus, Alex Ross, Cody Halbur, Shane Duff, and Tyler McKee.  Honorary Casket Bearers Marty Paulsen, Reuben Paulsen, Wayne Paulsen, Adam Risius, and Jim Whitver.  Burial will be in the Orange Township Cemetery near Coon Rapids.

Visitation will be held on Friday, August 30, 2024 from 5 – 7 P.M. at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Coon Rapids.  The casket will be moved to the First United Methodist Church at 9:30 A.M. on Saturday where visitation will resume until 10:15 A.M. prior to the service.

Lyle was the son of Marvin Paulsen and Ethel (Hague) Paulsen.  He was born on September 16, 1937 at home on the farm in Melville Township, Audubon County, Iowa. He grew up on the farm and attended rural school through the ninth grade at Union #3, The Hague School. He completed his education at Coon Rapids High School, graduating with the Class of 1955. He worked as a farm hand for a couple of years and for the Milwaukee Railroad for three years. Lyle was united in marriage with Juanita Smouse on June 28, 1959 at the First United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids. Six children were born to this union. Lyle ran a portable feed grinder for The Hague Hatchery for seven years and then had the Standard Oil Tank Wagon from 1967 to 1988. He became the night watchman and did seasonal work for local hybrid companies until his retirement in 2010. Lyle was a member of the First United Methodist Church and also attended Alive Church. In his spare time, he planted and cared for a large vegetable garden. He and his wife canned much of the produce along with chickens over their many years together.  Lyle loved to talk history, politics, and gardening with anyone who would listen, and he never met a stranger.

Lyle is survived by his children: Larry Paulsen (Diane) of Coon Rapids, Gloria Risius (Joe) of Ankeny, Michelle Sterns (A.J.) of Johnston, Sue Risius (Rich) of Grimes, Joan Wiskus of Coon Rapids, and Norman Paulsen (Luann) of Coon Rapids; 20 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; two nieces, one nephew, other relatives and many good friends.

Preceding Lyle in death are his parents Marvin and Ethel Paulsen; his wife Juanita in 2015;  grandson, in infancy, Donald Sterns; father and mother-in-law Howard and LaVon Smouse; brother-in-law Steve Smouse; sister-in-law Janet Cretsinger (Norman); and a son-in-law Richard Wiskus.
