As Iowans prepare for the unofficial end of summer, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is urging visitors to state parks and waterways to prioritize safety during what is expected to be a hectic Labor Day weekend. Boaters should avoid peak hours, park only in designated areas, and always designate a sober operator. The legal blood alcohol content (BAC) limit of .08 applies to boating, just as it does to driving. Life jackets are a must for all passengers, with children under 13 required to wear them at all times. Boats should have a charged fire extinguisher and a whistle or horn available while on the water. Swimmers should always keep young children within arm’s reach, avoid alcohol, and use sunscreen. Public beaches in Iowa do not have lifeguards, so swimming with a buddy and staying within designated areas is advised. Visitors to the state’s many parks and campgrounds are encouraged to plan ahead, hike in groups, and respect park rules. Parking outside designated areas will result in citations.
