Law enforcement agencies throughout Iowa and the Midwest will be out in significant numbers this weekend as part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Labor Day enforcement program. The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” initiative targets impaired drivers over the unofficial last weekend in summer. Officers are putting an added emphasis on impairment, be it from alcohol, marijuana, or any other chemical intoxicant, which could lead to time behind bars for drunk or high drivers who choose to get behind the wheel. Drivers are encouraged to designate a sober driver, use a rideshare service, or call a taxi if they plan to celebrate this weekend. The Labor Day initiative began on Aug. 16 and runs through Monday, Sept. 2.
