Marlys DeVries of Carroll

Marlys DeVries, age 78, of Carroll died Monday, September 9, 2024 at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, September 16, 2024 at Central Church in Carroll with Pastor Ryan Gallegos officiating.  Casket Bearers will be Austin Wiederin, Ryan Kline, Joe Cook, Kurk Shrader, Jody Brincks, and Duane Sloth.  Burial will be in the Carroll City Cemetery.

A visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. on Sunday at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll.  Additional visitation will be from 9:30-10:15 a.m. on Monday at the church.

Marlys was born on the daughter of Clifford and Nora (White) Dettman on April 2, 1946 in Stella Nebraska. She graduated from Dawson-Verdon High School in 1965. After graduation she lived in Omaha and met Gary Balk. They were married on May 22, 1971 at Sacred Heart Church in Templeton, Iowa. They moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming where she worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield in claims. To this union they had one daughter Kimberly in 1977.

She enjoyed bowling, sewing, especially cross stitching and crocheting. She loved seeing friends, playing cards and putting picture puzzles together. Marlys collected teddy bears and loved the color purple.  In 1988 they moved back to Iowa to be closer to family, later separating in 1996.

Marlys lived in Carroll and worked at SITEL then Walmart where she retired after 15 years as a cashier. She gained many friends along the way. She enjoyed some traveling and mostly attending her grandchildren’s events whether it be a T-ball game or football game she was there cheering them on.

In the last 10 years she had had many health challenges but always faced them with a smile and a get it done attitude. She loved her great-grandchildren and was all smiles when she found out a new one was on the way. She loved making homemade gifts for them cross stitching baby blankets.

Marlys was known for her quirky remarks and joking personality.

Left to celebrate her life is her daughter Kimberly Wiederin (Shawn); her grandchildren: Morgan (Joe) Cook, Nicole Wiederin (Ryan Kline)  and Austin Wiederin (Emma Ahrenholtz) all of Manning; her great-grandchildren: Alyssa Wiederin, Colton Wiederin, Olivia, Conner and Macie Cook and Peyton Kline; she is also survived by her brother, Wayne Dettman of Bern KS; her sisters: Millie Buethe of Plattsmouth, NE and Norma Schutte of Lincoln NE,  Doris Jean (Wayne) Schafer of Stella, NE and brother Weldon (Sharon) Dettman of Humboldt, NE; her sister-in-law Naomi Dettman of Auburn, NE; as well as any nieces and nephews and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Clifford and Nora Dettman; her sisters Colleen (Charles) Shrader and Eldona Workman; her brothers Don, Loy and Dale Dettman; brothers-in-laws Ron Buethe and Gene Schutte; sister-in-law Lena Dettman; her granddaughter Katelyn Wiederin and great-granddaughter Madilyn Cook.
