Audubon County Memorial Hospital and Clinics (ACMH) is excited to offer two new technologies of advanced scientific detection and treatment for breast cancer patients. Earlier this month, ACMH started using the Magseed® marker technology, the first facility in the area to utilize the minimally invasive metallic seed to mark cancerous tumors in the patient’s body. The seed, the size of a grain of rice, is placed at the cancer site, emitting a magnetic signal that is traced by a Sentimag® probe, in a similar way to how a metal detector works, to assist surgeons in removing the cancer and get the patient scheduled with additional treatment sooner, if need be. ACMH also offers access to the world’s first non-radioactive, dual-tracer breast cancer staging technology, using an iron oxide-based magnetic solution, migrating along the path of the invasive cancer cells and emitting a magnetic signal assisting surgeons to detect and remove the necessary lymph nodes. General Surgeon for ACMH, Dr. Jeffrey Maire, says, “Magtrace® and Magseed® provide highly accurate guidance for procedures and give flexibility as to when these agents can be deployed. Magtrace® eliminates the dual method of radionucleotide and blue dye to one injection that has the staining of the lymph node for identification and the magnetic precision for find the lymph nodes involved.” To schedule an appointment with Dr. Marie or for more information on this new technology, contact ACMH’s Outpatient Specialty Clinic at 712-563-5304.
