Whiterock Conservancy is closing in on its 20th anniversary and is inviting the public to celebrate with them the first weekend of October. Whiterock’s staff and volunteers have a full day of events planned for Saturday. Oct. 5. They begin the festivities at 9 a.m. with a 5K color run with Main Street Coon Rapids (MSCR) in downtown. Registration opens at 8 a.m. at 501 S. 5th Ave. Also beginning at 9 a.m. and running until noon, the Main Street Farmer’s market, a live animal program, educational programming, and nature games will be available at the Historic Garst Farm southeast of town. The team is offering brief gator rides around the farm from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., and food trucks will be available between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The anniversary ceremony is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. at the farmstead, followed by a live bird program with SOAR (Saving Our Avian Resources). There is a bit of a lull in the afternoon, but things pick back up again at 5 p.m. with a show from the Iowa Stage Theatre Company at the River Barn. Whiterock closes the anniversary celebration with a public star party featuring the Ames Area Amateur Astronomers at the Star Field Campground. Whiterock Conservancy formed in 2004 following a structured land trust gift of over 5,000 acres.
