New Hope Vocational Staff On Strike For Equal Wages And Respect From Employers

A little over a dozen New Hope Direct Service Professionals (DSP) staff stood across the street from the dayhab service center, protesting for fair wages and affirming being a part of a unified team. Last Thursday, New Hope staff were informed that all staff members would receive a $1.81 salary increase, except for vocational staff that runs the day hab and employment services. Earlier in the meeting, New Hope employers reviewed with staff members the new mission and values of the company, which are respect, fairness, valuing all, quality service, choice, integrity, honesty, and strong moral principles as an undivided team and belonging. A spokesperson for the protesters says the team chose to believe the new mission statement but believes the New Hope employers are not following their own preachings.

Protesters say the vocational services comply with all of the mission and values established by the New Hope company, and the spokesperson finds it disheartening that DSP vocational staff are seen as undeserving of a competitive wage compared to their peers.

Vocational staff want it to be known they did not walk out and did inform supervisors last week of the intention to strike until a meeting can be scheduled with New Hope CEO and a third party to discuss demands. Protesters stood outside on the corner of N. Clark Street and E 4th Street from 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and were encouraged by support in honks and waves from commuters.

New Hope CEO has released the following statement regarding the protest: “New Hope Village can confirm a small group of staff members recently walked off the job at Day Hab over a disagreement regarding the size of their raises. We respect their right to voice their opinions and concerns, however, naturally are disappointed they have chosen to do so in this way. Management is currently working to address the situation. New Hope Village management has also assured the families of our clients that their loved ones continue to be well taken care of, and we have plans in place to ensure continuation of services without interruption.”
