October Is National Pedestrian Safety Month; Watch For Walkers While On The Road

October is National Pedestrian Safety Month, and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reminds drivers to be vigilant for pedestrians. In 2022, 7,522 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes, a nearly one-percent increase from 2021, making it the highest fatality rate since 1981. On average, a pedestrian was killed every 70 minutes in 2022, accounting for 18 percent of all traffic deaths. With Halloween now just a few weeks away, drivers are reminded to slow down, as children may unexpectedly dart into the street. Experts recommend the “Safe System Approach,” which helps reduce injury by encouraging safe driving and waking behaviors, reducing speeds, improving vehicle safety, and enhancing post-crash care. NHTSA Regional Administrator Susan DeCourcy says, “Walking is one of the best things you can do for both your mental and physical health, and also for the environment. We want to help ensure that pedestrians in our communities are safe on the sidewalks, crossing the street – anywhere that people walk, bike, or roll they should be able to do so without fear or stress. We urge drivers to take the time to look out for pedestrians, slow down, and incorporate pedestrian awareness into their driving routines.” Links with more information about pedestrian safety are included below.
