The race for the Carroll County District 5 Board of Supervisors seat is one of only a few local contested elections on the November ballot. There is no incumbent in this race, as Republican Mark McCrea of Carroll is running against Democrat Cindy Johnson of Carroll for the position previously held by Richard Ruggles and Cindy Scaturico. McCrea is a lifelong Carroll County resident. He grew up in Glidden before moving to Carroll over 30 years ago to raise his family. McCrea will be retiring from Pella Corp. at the end of the year, which brought on the question: what comes next?
McCrea has not sought elected office before, but he says he does have a long history of serving the communities in which he lives and works.
McCrea believes Carroll County runs a well-oiled machine, and he has no specific gripes or concerns about current operations. He views his role, if elected, as continuing the good things going on in Carroll County for the next generation. As Iowans struggle with rising property taxes due to substantial jumps in assessments, he wants to ensure Carroll Countians are seeing a return on their tax money, rural and urban. McCrea says voters should know he has no agenda behind his decision to run, and he looks forward to representing taxpayers and residents on the board.
McCrea and his Democratic opponent, Cindy Johnson, are scheduled to appear at the Carroll Chamber of Commerce’s candidate forum on Tuesday, Oct. 15, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Carroll Rec Center. Early voting in Iowa opens the following day on Oct. 16.
