The Carroll Chamber of Commerce and Carroll County Growth Partnership (CCGP) featured the candidates from the county and district races during last night’s (Tuesday) forum. The seat for District 6 Senate position is one of the three contested during this election year. The race features Libertarian David Davis from Harlan and Republican Jason Schultz from Schleswig. After opening statements, moderator Rick Hunsaker asked all candidates thoughts of Gov. Kim Reynolds Students First Act, providing education savings accounts (ESA) to all K-12 students, regardless of public or private schools. Davis said he would support the program, if the original intent behind the bill stays how Reynolds proposed it.

Both Hunsaker and Davis referred to the ESAs as vouchers, which Schultz said is incorrect and it should not be labeled as that.

Following in line with school discussions, another question asked was about the summer meal program, offering all students the opportunity to meals provided when school is not in session. Schultz said this was going to be the shocking statement of the night by saying he does not believe the summer meal program is adequate.

Davis agreed with Schultz on his statement, however says he is unsure if he favors or opposes the program.

Another concern that was addressed was border security and the impact of lessened control down at the border being seen up here in Iowa. Davis says he is not sure because there is so much stir of potential false information that is being spread across on social media platforms.

Schultz says border security is an issue that needs to be addressed to protect Iowans.
