The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) has announced the allocation of $11.5 million in federal highway safety funds for the 2025 fiscal year. The grants will be distributed to over 300 traffic safety partners across Iowa to address critical issues on the state’s roads. GTSB Bureau Chief Brett Tjepkes says, “Since 2019, 10,000 people have died or been seriously injured on Iowa roads. Lack of seat belt use, impaired driving, distracted driving, speeding, and other risky driving behaviors continue to wreak havoc.” The funds will be used for law enforcement equipment, training, education projects, and community programs. The Iowa Restaurant Association will expand its ServSafe Alcohol training to include Spanish-language courses, while Mothers Against Drunk Driving and Iowa’s Child Passenger Safety program will continue to receive support. Traffic safety agencies and advocates meeting safety standards are encouraged to apply for future grants through Iowa Grants in January, and a link to those application materials is included with this story on our website.
