During Monday night’s meeting, the Carroll Community School District (CCSD) Board of Education welcomed student board members, approved the new math curriculum, reviewed certified enrollment numbers, and more. Board members opened the meeting by welcoming two student representatives, Lily Campbell and Claire Pudenz, both seniors at Carroll High School, who will sit in on regular monthly meetings as non-voting members and gather students’ input on different policies and programs implemented throughout the district to report back to the board. Middle School Principal Scot Aden spoke to the members and administration teams about the adjustments being made and the impact of the passing of assistant middle school principal Jill Greiman Gustafson. Aden said the Area Education Agency (AEA) sent a crisis team to the middle school, seeing over 30 students and aiding them through the grieving process. The district is now looking for an interim assistant principal to finish out the rest of this year. An agreement with Plains Area Mental Health was approved, giving Adams and Fairview Elementary Schools a licensed therapist shared between the two buildings three days a week. Elementary students will be selected through a referral process to be provided therapy services. Members approved the personnel report, which included the resignation of Fairview Elementary Principal Sue Ruch, who has a combined 44 years of service in the school setting, at the end of this year. Board members also had controversy on the hiring of the girl’s wrestling coach, but it was approved on a 3-2 vote. The board approved the purchase of ALEKS, an online math resource, and a new special education math curriculum that will serve all K-12 students for a total of $40,186. Finishing out the meeting, board members approved nine quotes for various items such as a heavy-duty pickup, musical instruments, a dump trailer, two SUVs, and salad bar/serving counters for Adams and CMS. In upcoming newscasts, Carroll Broadcasting will bring you more from the CCSD Board of Education meeting.
