DOJ-Department-of-Justice

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa is preparing to investigate complaints related to voter interference, intimidation, and fraud on Election Day. U.S. Attorney Richard Westphal announced Friday that Assistant U.S. Attorney Amy Licht will lead the Southern District of Iowa’s efforts in the Justice Department’s nationwide Election Day Program. As District Election Officer, Licht will oversee election day complaints related to voting rights, election official threats, and election fraud, in coordination with the Justice Department in Washington, D.C. Westphal says, “Every citizen must be able to vote without interference or discrimination and to have that vote counted in a fair and free election. Similarly, election officials and staff must be able to serve without being subject to unlawful threats of violence. The Department of Justice will always work tirelessly to protect the integrity of the election process.” Federal law prohibits acts such as intimidating voters, altering votes, and threats against election officials. Voters can report concerns to Licht’s office at 515-473-9300, while the FBI’s field office is also available at 515-223-4278 for reports of election abuses. For cases of violence or intimidation, the Justice Department urges immediate 911 calls, as state and local law enforcement can often respond faster. Complaints can also be filed online using the link included below.
