A Carroll-based drag racer, Jeremy Demers, is in Las Vegas this week as he looks to strengthen his position at the top of the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) standings. Demers currently holds the highest ranking in the “Super Gas” Divisional, tied with a racer out of Division 2. Demers says he has a chance to take a solo lead during the Ford Performance NHRA Nationals this weekend.
NHRA standings are a bit confusing for those who aren’t drag racing fans. Demers is leading in Division 5 heading into this weekend and has a chance to finish first in the overall rankings by season’s end.
However, Demers won’t be competing at either of those events. Drag racing is a whole different category from the traditional round-track racing seen in NASCAR or sprint cars. Demers says the track is a quarter-mile long and is all about power.
Demers grew up racing with his father, Larry Demers, who is with him in Las Vegas this week. He says the two of them have built their team up from a garage hobby to national contenders.
Larry Demers has also claimed a few wins in his division this season. Jeremy Demers is also part-owner of NAPA Auto Parts in Carroll and Manning. He begins qualifiers on Thursday, and depending on his performance, races could continue through the weekend. The schedule for the Ford Performance NHRA Las Vegas Nationals and links to watch the races are included below.
