MidAmerican Energy Offers Aid To Families Worried About Heating Bills This Winter

With colder weather arriving, MidAmerican Energy is encouraging low-income Iowans to apply for assistance with heating bills through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Administered by local community action agencies, LIHEAP provides funds based on household income, family size, and type of heating fuel used. Eligibility for LIHEAP requires household incomes at or below 200 percent of federal poverty guidelines. For example, a four-person household qualifies with an annual gross income of $62,420 or less. Community action agencies began accepting applications on Oct. 1 for individuals over 60, those with disabilities, or people facing crisis situations. General applications open on Nov. 1 and continue through April 30, 2025. Iowans can apply for LIHEAP at their local community action outreach office or dial 211 for more information. MidAmerican also offers budget billing to avoid month-to-month bill fluctuations, and its I-CARE program also provides funding to low-income Iowans with bills and home weatherization.
