A Rockwell City man has been taken into custody on two outstanding warrants after attempting to break into a residence during his pretrial release. According to Calhoun County District Court records, 35-year-old Chet Austin Mitchell was taken into custody on Apr. 23 on four outstanding warrants for possession of drug paraphernalia, third-degree theft, possession of a controlled substance second offense and third-degree burglary after a search warrant discovered methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and stolen items that were reported missing from a residence in the 800 block of Pleasant Street in Rockwell City were in Mitchell’s possession. Mitchell was released from custody after posting a $5,000 surety bond. On Aug. 10, Mitchell was taken into custody after a second search warrant was executed and discovered counterfeit money, an additional charge of forgery, a class D felony. On Aug. 22, Mitchell was placed on pretrial release from jail after entering a plea agreement for the third-degree theft charge and possession of a controlled substance. Mitchell proceeded to violate terms of pretrial release on Sept. 12, when he was taken into custody after being caught on camera attempting to break into an occupied structure. Mitchell is currently facing all original charges of forgery, third-degree burglary, class D felonies, third-degree theft, and second-offense possession of a controlled substance, both aggravated misdemeanors. Mitchell is being held at the Carroll County Jail on no bond until his sentencing hearing. All charges combined could carry a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison and $27,500 in fines.
