The West Central Iowa Solid Waste Management is reminding customers to avoid throwing their pumpkins, jack-o-lanterns, and other organic waste in with their regular garbage now that the fun of Halloween has passed. Education Coordinator Abbey Conrad says thousands of old pumpkins end up in the local landfill each year, which takes up space that would be better used for other types of garbage.

Conrad adds that the landfill’s staff churns their compost pile year-round, which customers can then reuse in the spring as fertilizer for their gardens and lawns. She says not everybody will want to bring their old gourds to the recycling center, but nature offers other options.
