Sac County Sheriff Ken McClure released a statement today (Wednesday) after the jail bond referendum did not pass by the required vote count. On Election night, Sac County Sheriff’s Office placed a $10.9 million bond to construct a new jail and update the law enforcement facility. The measure needed to pass with 60 percent of votes in favor of the bond, just shy of that by a mere 1.21 percent. McClure says, “At first glance, this appears to be a failure. Likewise, this result also tells us that 58.79 percent of those who voted yesterday (Tuesday) did vote yes to develop our infrastructure to keep our staff and community safe.” This was the first attempt to pass the referendum, which was estimated to raise taxes by approximately $0.058 per $1,000 of taxable assessed valuation. McClure wants to thank the Board of Supervisors for putting this measure for a public vote, and supporting the project. He adds, “We will continue to find a solution that is fiscally responsible and will mitigate liabilities for Sac County taxpayers. In the days and weeks to come, we will be reevaluating what our next steps will be to ensure the ongoing safety of our community.”
