In a message to parents yesterday (Thursday), the Kuemper Catholic School System announced plans to become a nearly device-free campus for students in the 2025-26 school year, citing concerns over the impact of smartphones and social media on youth mental health. The policy, developed in consultation with the Kuemper school board, will restrict student cell phone use during school hours, with implementation details to be provided closer to the start of next school year. Kuemper President John Steffes says the decision to move forward with the plan was influenced by the book, “The Anxious Generation” by Jonathan Haidt, which highlights the often-overlooked effects of too-much screentime on kids. In addition to the updated cell phone policy, Kuemper will discontinue its Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program for students in grades 7-12. Beginning in August 2025, the school will provide standardized devices to all students in those grades, aiming to improve cybersecurity and streamline state testing. Parents were informed early to prepare for the changes, especially as the Christmas shopping season gets underway. Parents with questions or concerns are encouraged to contact the administration at their child’s attendance center.
