In honor of Veterans Day on Monday, State Treasurer Roby Smith is urging veteran service organizations to take steps to be reunited with unclaimed funds they may unknowingly have rights to. The call is part of the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt, the state’s unclaimed property program, which includes over $566 million in forgotten assets. Dozens of these veteran groups throughout the state have money owed to them, in some cases totaling thousands of dollars, but the organizations need to initiate the funds’ return. Money and other assets are turned over to the State Treasurer’s Office when businesses and entities have lost contact with the owner after a specific period of time. The State Treasurer’s Office safeguards the assets and works to reunite owners with their unclaimed property through Great Iowa Treasure Hunt. Iowans can support these veteran organizations by encouraging them to claim their funds. Smith suggests searching your own name for any unclaimed property and consider donating it to a local veteran’s group at www.greatiowatreasurehunt.gov.
