Lake City officials addressed residents’ questions regarding water quality and safety in a social media post on Tuesday afternoon. In the latest Water Quality Report published in March of this year, all contaminants were within safe ranges as defined by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Due to regulations established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the DNR, city public works and utility crews needed to identify the materials used to create the service line connecting properties to the water main. Jacob Matthews, city administrator, says three letters were sent out to properties addressing their service lines.
Matthews stresses that individuals who did not receive a letter mean service lines have been confirmed as lead-free. He says the city’s water is still safe to drink, shower, and clean, and he encourages all who get a letter to read it entirely and follow the steps.
Another step residents can take is to use cold water from the tap when drinking, cooking, or preparing baby formula. Matthews says anyone with any more concerns can contact him at city hall.
Again, Matthews wants to inform residents that this information is to provide transparency about the water quality in Lake City. Once more guidance is given from the EPA or the Iowa DNR, details on the next steps will be released. He encourages all who still have questions or concerns to contact him at city hall by calling 712-640-6401.
