A Kuemper Catholic student’s drive to collect toys for children receiving treatment at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital, where he first became a patient when he was an infant, is soon wrapping up. Austin Mollhoff, who is now 8, was just 10 months old when he was diagnosed with a rare brain cancer, craniopharyngioma. His mother, Jen Mollhoff, says Austin has undergone countless surgeries and treatments over the last eight years. Rather than dwell on the challenges of childhood cancer, Austin is instead focusing on the other patients in the hospital.

Mollhoff says her son is collecting all sorts of items, from toys for the children in the hospital to support materials for their parents. They’ve put together a wish list online for people to look at items and quickly order.

An anonymous donor recently partnered with the Carroll Bomgaars for a toy shopping spree to help with the drive, nearly filling a truck with donations. Mollhoff says people can drop off donations through Nov. 22. Austin will then deliver the items to the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital later this month.

Links to Austin Mollhoff’s supply and toy drive are included with this story on our website. Mollhoff says Austin would be ecstatic to bring piles of donated gifts to the kids receiving treatment at the hospital, and every contribution makes a difference for a patient and their family.
