Manning Fire and Rescue members welcome John Lorenzen’s promotion to fire chief after the retirement of the previous long-standing chief. For the past 28 years, Bob Barsby has served as the department’s assistant or fire chief, serving Manning, Aspinwall, and the surrounding areas. Lorenzen says almost 30 years is long, and Barsby was ready to pass the position on.
Growing up in Manning, Lorenzen saw firsthand how important the department was to the residents and the community. He moved away for a short time to Des Moines but returned in 2005 after discovering his true passion for serving.
Stepping into this leading role, Lorenzen says he knows he has some big shoes to fill with the impact left by Barsby. While having no specific goals, Lorenzen says he plans to support the department in striving to be the best it can be.
Those interested in joining the volunteer department are asked to contact Lorenzen by calling the station at 712-655-2496. He is willing to answer questions and help get someone started with the training process. Lorenzen wants to thank Barsby for the guidance over the past few years and the entire department for the support as he transitions into his new role.
