GTSB Targets Seatbelt Usage In Thanksgiving STEP Initiative

The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) is joining forces with law enforcement agencies across Iowa to promote road safety during the busy Thanksgiving holiday season. Drivers can expect heightened police presence on Iowa roads through Sunday, Dec. 1. With millions traveling to celebrate, GTSB emphasizes the importance of seat belt use, reminding motorists to “Buckle Up. Every Trip. Every Time.” Last year during Thanksgiving week, 34 people in Iowa were killed or severely injured in crashes, and 40 percent of those victims were not wearing seat belts. GTSB Occupant Protection Program Coordinator Marigrace Porcelli says, “The Thanksgiving holiday marks the beginning of a cherished season for many. Whether your journey is short or long, it’s essential all drivers and passengers buckle up—Every Trip, Every Time. Ensure every passenger in your vehicle is secured, including children.” The bureau also warns against impaired driving, urging travelers to plan for a sober ride if they plan to imbibe during their Thanksgiving celebrations. GTSB collaborates with local and state organizations to reduce road injuries and fatalities, which is supported by federally funded grants.
