The man accused of attempting to murder a Lake View resident with a knife more than a year ago has been sentenced to up to 55 years in prison. According to Sac County District Court records, 71-year-old James Murphy Debourgh of Cheyenne, Wyo., who authorities describe as a “transient, homeless man,” was charged with two class B felonies, attempted murder and first-degree burglary, and three class D felonies, going armed with intent, willful injury and assault while participating in a felony, following the Sept. 24, 2023 assault in the 900 block of 7th Street in Lake. Debourgh entered the victim’s residence and waited for his return. Upon the victim’s arrival, Debourgh allegedly approached him and said, “I am here to kill you. “The victim tried to flee in his car, but Debourgh slashed him through the vehicle’s window, causing lacerations to the left side of his face. Following a plea agreement with prosecutors, the attempted murder and assault charges were dismissed, and Debourgh was sentenced to 25 years on the burglary charge, 15 years on the willful injury charge, and five years for going armed with intent. The sentences are to be served consecutively.
