Iowa’s Most Popular Deer Season Opens Next Weekend

Iowa’s gun deer hunting seasons will kick off Dec. 7-11 for the first season and Dec. 14-22 for the second season. Around 100,000 hunters are expected to participate, with last year’s seasons accounting for over 60,000 deer harvested, more than half of the statewide total. While early hunting efforts have yielded a slightly lower harvest than in 2023 due to declining deer populations in western Iowa, the archery season’s strong November harvest has hunters optimistic for December. Cooler weather could further boost participation and deer activity. Hunter safety remains a key focus. Craig Cutts, chief of the Iowa DNR’s Law Enforcement Bureau, urges hunters to inspect gear, ensure blaze orange attire is effective, and adhere to their hunting plans. Rifle use has increased safety concerns, with an average of nine incidents per season involving rifles. Hunters are reminded to prioritize safety and conservation while enjoying Iowa’s rich hunting traditions. Visit www.iowaDNR.gov for more information on the state’s hunting rules and regulations.
