Over a decade of restoration efforts at Black Hawk Lake in Sac County have dramatically improved water quality and boosted recreational opportunities at the 922-acre natural lake. The lake, which has struggled with poor water quality since the 1930s, has benefited from a multi-million-dollar investment to address sediment and nutrient pollution, manage fish populations, and enhance its ecosystem. Restoration efforts began in 2012 after community meetings and studies highlighted significant water quality issues, including intense algae blooms. Projects have included the installation of over 211 watershed practices, such as stream restorations, wetland development, and urban runoff controls, which have collectively reduced annual sediment loads by more than 4,000 tons and phosphorus by nearly 9,000 pounds. In-lake work has included fishery renovation, shoreline stabilization, and extensive dredging. A major dredging project completed in 2023 removed over 750,000 cubic yards of sediment, increasing lake depth and reducing excessive vegetation. Investments have also enhanced recreational amenities, including an ADA fishing pier and fish cleaning station. The $18.5 million effort, led by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and local partners, has revitalized Black Hawk Lake, which attracts an estimated 60,000+ annual visitors and spurs local tourism.
