NIH Review Shows Holiday Stress Leads Many To Overeat

The holiday season is a time of joy but also stress for many Iowans, which can bring on bouts of stress-related eating issues. A 2023 review by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) shows that the festive season poses significant risks for weight fluctuations. The study analyzed 10 articles with over 4,500 participants and found most people experienced weight increases during the winter holidays. Notably, much of the weight gained remained after the holiday season, posing long-term challenges for those already struggling with obesity. Researchers identified several contributing factors, including psychological stress and behavioral patterns, such as higher caloric consumption during holiday gatherings. They also analyzed the nutritional composition of traditional holiday foods, noting their role in exacerbating weight gain. Targeted interventions, such as supervised exercise programs and controlled diets during the Christmas season, proved effective in minimizing weight gain for individuals with metabolic or weight problems. Additionally, small, manageable strategies—like mindful eating and portion control—were recommended to help prevent excess weight gain during the festive period.
