U.S. Rep. Randy Feenstra (R-Hull) today (Friday) voted for the Crucial Communism Teaching Act that would require schools to teach about the history and failures of communism to high school students. The bill seeks to develop and distribute a civic education curriculum for U.S. high school students, created by the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation, which would include historical comparisons of political ideologies conflicting with democratic principles, oral histories of victims, and stories showcasing civic-minded individuals. It aims to educate students on communism’s global impact, including over 100 million deaths and ongoing oppression of 1.5 billion people, fostering awareness and civic responsibility. The initiative collaborates with state and local educational leaders to integrate these resources into schools. Feenstra says, “According to recent statistics, nearly one-third of America’s youth hold a favorable opinion of communism, and nearly twenty percent believe that communism is better than capitalism. These alarming findings cannot be the norm for future generations of Americans if we want our country to succeed and prosper.”
