The Carroll County Board of Supervisors formally adopted a countywide highway safety pledge during Monday’s meeting. County Engineer Zac Andersen presented the pledge and said its approval could open additional funding avenues for Carroll County.

The pledge solidifies Carroll County’s support of Iowa’s Five-year Strategic Highway Safety Plan and aligns the county with the state’s goal of zero fatalities on Iowa’s public roadways. The plan takes a five-tier approach to reducing traffic deaths, focusing on safer people, vehicles, speeds, and roads, as well as post-crash care. Andersen notes reducing traffic injuries and fatalities should be a priority for all Iowans, and the potential for additional funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Legislation (BIL) will help further that goal.

The plan outlines the state’s and Carroll County’s goal of dramatically decreasing fatalities by 2030 and 2050, respectively, and signals the county’s intent to participate in the plan’s designated safety strategies. Those include a higher participation rate concerning occupant protection devices, reductions in impaired and distracted driving, fewer speed-related incidences, and improved road quality.
