USDA Awards $7.5 Million To Infrastructure Projects In Western Iowa

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced this week $39 million in loans and grants to improve water and electric infrastructure in nine rural Iowa counties, including Calhoun, Greene, Sac, and Shelby. USDA State Rural Development Director Theresa Greenfield says, “A strong rural Iowa economy is rooted in our people and in the delivery of safe, reliable water and electricity to support the needs of families as well as for the growth of employers and the workforce. USDA is making these investments to better position rural America to compete in a global economy, while ensuring people who live and work in these communities can find success right at home in Iowa.” The funding includes a $6 million loan to the Calhoun County Electric Cooperative Association for 58 miles of electric line improvements, connecting homes to modern services. The project also includes $322,128 for smart grid technologies, serving Calhoun, Greene, Pocahontas, Sac, and Webster counties. Additionally, the City of Defiance received a $1.6 million loan to upgrade wastewater treatment facilities, enhancing water quality and addressing sanitary hazards for 245 residents in Shelby County. The investment is part of a broader national initiative announced by USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack.
